We’ll take a look at the who, what, why and how of Travel Agents. Hopefully along the way, we can answer some questions and dispel the myths of being and using a travel agent. Let’s start with a few of the most common questions:
Who are Travel Agents?
In addition to being small businesses, travel agents are professionals who specialize in helping individuals, families and groups plan and book their trips. Travel agents have extensive knowledge about various destinations, accommodations, transportation options and activities; making them a valuable resource for anyone looking to travel. Travel Agents also have a love for travel and it comes out in the work they do for others! In many cases, this love for travel manifests itself before someone even becomes a travel agent when planning trips for themselves, their families and friends.
Why should you work with a travel agent?
Working with a travel agent can provide numerous benefits that make your travel experience smoother and more enjoyable. Travel agents have the expertise and knowledge to help you plan the perfect trip tailored to your preferences and budget. They can offer personalized recommendations, insider tips, and will stay on the lookout for new promotions you may not find on your own or that come out after booking your trip. This can save time, effort, and frustration in the planning process.
Additionally, travel agents can save you time and stress by handling all the details of your trip, such as finding the best flights, accommodations, transportation, and activities for your trip. If any issues arise during your travels, having a travel agent to assist you can be invaluable in resolving them quickly and efficiently.
Furthermore, travel agents can provide peace of mind by offering support before, during, and after your trip. Whether you need assistance with itinerary changes, travel insurance, or emergency situations, a travel agent is there to help every step of the way. In short, the travel agent will be on the phone or computer working to keep your trip moving in the right direction.
Overall, working with a travel agent can enhance your travel experience and make your journey more memorable and hassle-free. Whether you're dreaming of a relaxing beach getaway, an amazing cruise, an adventurous expedition or a cultural city escape, a travel agent will help turn your travel dreams into reality.
How do Travel Agents get paid?
Travel agents can be compensated in various ways for the services they provide. In most cases they earn a commission from the travel suppliers they work with, such as hotels, resorts, theme parks and tour operators. This commission is already built into the supplier’s price which means you aren’t paying more for the service. In some cases travel agents charge service or planning fees to their clients for the time and expertise they provide. Typically these fees are for highly customized trips or additional services provided for trips not booked through the travel agent. Ultimately, how a travel agent gets paid can vary depending on their business model and the specific arrangements they have with their clients and suppliers. Just remember, when you tap into your travel agent’s knowledge and time, let them go ahead and make that booking for you.
Myths about using a Travel Agent.
No one uses travel agents anymore: False. Travel agents sell 51% of all airline tickets, 87% of all cruises, 81% of all tours and packages, 45% of all car rentals and about 47% of all hotels. In fact, the travel industry is booming and travel agents are often invited to tour resorts and cruise ships so we can tell you firsthand which options are best for you!
A travel agent is just a sales person: False. Travel agents are genuinely excited to work with you because of the real conversations that lead to uncovering your vacation styles, hopes and dreams to achieve the ultimate vacation again and again! Their goal isn’t to end their relationship with you after selling you an epic adventure, but rather be your go-to guide, for every vacation you take moving forward. They also love seeing your trip pictures and any kind words you’d like to share!
I can easily book the same trip on my own without a travel agent: True. Although travel agents have access to all of the same outlets you would use when looking to book travel, they also have access to exclusive pricing and package deals that are not available to the public in many cases. Your travel agent also has more leverage in helping out in situations such as hotels claiming to be booked, when in fact they may still have rooms available that are on hold for travel agents’ reservations. So when everyone else is telling you “No” your travel agent can help turn that to a “Yes.”
